    NU Bullpups defeat Letran Squires to gain PSSBC quarterfinals

    RJ MINERVA had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Rhayyan Amsali added 14 points and 14 rebounds as National University beat Letran, 83-77, on Monday to advance into the quarterfinals of the 6th Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship Dickies Underwear Cup at the SGS Stadium.

    Michael Malonzo scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Terrence Fortea had 10 points as the the Bullpups swept Group B, 2-0.

    Kobe Bryan Monje had 11 points, while Kurt Reyson and Neil Tolentino each had 10 points for the Squires, who failed to win in two games of the preliminary round.

    With Letran’s defeat, Chiang Kai Shek College moved into the quarterfinals with a 1-1 win-loss slate, with its 81-65 decision over Letran on Saturday as its lone victory.

    A putback by Malonzo put NU up, 78-66, the biggest lead in the contest.

    Also making it to the quarterfinals was Far Eastern University, which beat Manila Patriotic School, 77-50.

    Ljhay Gonzales, Rheylan Boc and Xyrus Torres each had 10 points for the Baby Tamaraws, who finished the Group A preliminaries with a 1-1 win-loss slate.

    FEU dropped a 65-43 decision to San Beda on Sunday, but bounced back with a lopsided win to clinch a quarterfinal berth.

    No player from the winless MPS squad scored in double figures with Aljeric Ramirez topscoring with nine points.
