KEVIN ALAS suffered a sprained ankle last week but is expected to recover just in time for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball competitions in Myanmar.
Alas landed awkwardly on his left ankle in the waning moments of Gilas Pilipinas’ tune-up game against Café France on Thursday. Alas hasn’t joined national team practices ever since as the coaching staff decided to rest the former Letran star.
Alas also didn’t play for NLEX in its PBA D-League Aspirants Cup game on Monday.
But Alas quickly allayed fears about his health, saying that he will be ready for the December 8 to 16 SEA Games in Nay Pyi Taw.
“Kailangan ko lang ipahinga ito. Nung una, hindi pa masyadong maga pero ngayon, maga talaga. Therapy ako pero aabot naman sa SEA Games,” said Alas.
“At the most, one week lang ito. Siguro 100 percent na ako pagdating doon. Sa ngayon, pahinga muna dahil hindi pa talaga puwede. Maga pa,” Alas said.
NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez said Alas’ condition is day-to-day but he will not force his prized guard to play for the Road Warriors, who are set to face unbeaten teams Hogs Breath Café on Thursday and Big Chill on December 2.
The Road Warriors will also go up against Blackwater Sports on December 5 in a rematch of the Foundation Cup finals.
“I’m hoping that Kevin will be back soon,” Fernandez said. “We are trying na day-to-day, but one way or the other, he will be ready for Gilas. We will prioritize Kevin sa national team. We will not force him to play.”
