IN spite of abbreviated preparations for their Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) debut, Casino Active-Cebu Ninos head coach Gilbert Castillo is preaching patience as he gets into the process of selecting the right players that can fly the flag for this basketball hotbed.

With the MPBL set to begin on June 12, Castillo has a little over a month to get his team going. He arrived for a first look at this new set of players during the third of the five-day tryouts for this squad and the former Letran Knight said he liked what he saw.

But he will have to make the crucial decisions of cutting players and forming a squad.

“Siguro, ang pinaka-goal namin is makabuo ng team, to really find talented players that can compete at that level. As of now, binubuo pa lang talaga ang team,” said Castillo, who oversaw the scrimmages during the latter part of the session.

“Ang pinaka-mahirap dyan is ang lapit na ng June 12. Kapag binigla mo 'yan, injury ang mangyayari dyan. So we have to be patient,” he added.

Reports of the team holding tryouts in Manila were also shot down by Castillo who said that the talent pool there is already very thin with 20 MPBL teams being based there.

“Di na siguro sa Manila kasi wala nang player doon. Kumbaga sa tubig, malabo na ang ilalim, sa ibabaw wala ka nang makikita,” Castillo stressed.

Castillo disclosed that they might already have a working lineup come the weekend after he consults with the rest of the management team.

“Siguro tingnan ko lang hanggang Friday. Ayoko na ako lang ang mag desisyon.“
