Sacred Heart School rules Cebu NBTC leg, closes in on spot in national finals
The Magis Eagles advance to a knockout match against the winner of the Ormoc leg.

CEBU CITY – Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu captured its fifth Cebu title in the National Basketball Training Center, downing University of the Visayas, 110-75, in the finals on Sunday at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.

The win moved the Magis Eagles to a showdown with the champion of the Ormoc leg to determine who will advance to the national finals set March 5 to 8.

Pio Longa scored 22 points while Jan Jaboneta added 20 and Anton Chua chipped in 10 for the Magis Eagles, who last hoisted the national crown in 2011.

Ateneo de Cebu exploded for 41 points spiked by seven three-pointers in the opening period for a 19-point lead and never looked back.

Orlan Wamar led UV with 25 points, while Jancork Cabahug pitched in 19 and Theo Joshua Flores managed 16.

UV was called for a couple of unsportsmanlike fouls in the second period, but that hardly fazed the Magis Eagles’ as they surged in front some more and were up, 63-35, at halftime.

Ateneo de Cebu then closed the game out early in the third with a 17-0 run.

Jaboneta was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
