Sabandal finds range as Baby Falcons nip Perpetual to stay unbeaten in Freego Cup

ADAMSON and Jose Rizal University pulled off similar hard-earned wins and gained a share of the early lead in the 11th Freego Cup held over the weekend at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.

Joem Sabandal had another solid all-around performance to help lift the Adamson Baby Falcons to a 76-73 win over the University of Perpetuual Help Dalta System.

The speedy guard erupted for 27 points on an impressive 9-of-13 shooting aside from grabbing four boards and the same number of assists as the Baby Falcons notched their second straight win in the annual preseason tournament for Manila-based high school teams.

Not to be outdone, the JRU Light Bombers outlasted the University of the East Junior Warriors, 91-81, thanks to a double-double performance of John Amores.

Amores played only for 29 minutes but finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds. He also had five steals to emerge one of the best players of the day.

Sean Manaug led UE with 16 points and seven boards.

Meantime, National University bounced back from a shock 107-104 double overtime loss to the Altalettes with an 82-77 win over Far Eastern University.

Six-foot-7 Carl Tamayo led NU’s well-balanced attack this time with 17 points aside from posting 10 boards, two blocks and the same number of assists.

In the other game of the tournament also backed by Choi Garden, CW Home Depot, Powerhouse, and Hapee Toothpaste, Mapua University downed La Salle Greenhills, 81-71, for its first win in two games.

Clint Escamis led the Red Robins with 25 points and seven boards.
