CENTRO Escolar University’s Rodrigue Ebondo has been called up by the Democratic Republic of Congo for the African qualifiers of the Fiba Basketball World Cup, the school said on Thursday.

In a statement, CEU said Ebondo is slated to leave on November 19 just in time for the November 24 qualifiers which will have Congo bracketed in Group C along with Angola, Morocco, and Egypt.

Even though Ebondo won't leave until next month, CEU said the Scorpions will no longer play their top star in their remaining assignments in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL).

The 6-foot-6 Ebondo has led the Scorpions to numerous championships in different leagues while starring for the CEU-backed CafeFrance in its run to a PBA D-League crown.

The Scorpions are the reigning champions in the UCBL.

“CEU management wants the team to make the necessary adjustments by playing their remaining UCBL assignments without their star big man,” said the team statement.

His talent has not gone unnoticed as Ebondo became part of the Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas pool for the Fiba Asia Champions Cup. Ebondo failed to play as he was unable to get a Chinese visa for the tournament.

Ebondo’s call-up came after another African import in De La Salle’s Ben Mbala suited up for Cameroon in the Fiba Afrobasket last month.
