Heartbreaking setback for Pinay 'beach' squad

Pinays miss out on shot at Asian Beach Games gold after loss to China
Jun 18, 2012

The Philippine women’s beach basketball team will vie for the bronze medal against Mongolia in the 2012 Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China after dropping its semifinal match against the host country on Monday.

Analyn Almazan, Ewon Arayi, Melissa Jacob and Allana Lim, members of the silver medal-winning basketball team in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games, fell just a hairline short of the title match when it bowed to China in the crossover semifinals, 9-10.

The Pinay cagebelles clinched a semifinal berth in the three-on-three event after scoring an 11-10 win over Thailand, the same team that won the SEA Games indoor basketball gold. They finished the preliminaries in second place with a 2-1 win-loss card.

The bronze medal match is set Tuesday afternoon against Mongolia, which dropped a 16-21 decision to India in the semifinal round.

The Filipinas started the match with a 3-0 lead thanks to baskets from Lim and Arayi but the Chinese came back to make it a neck-and-neck affair.
