Orlan Wamar hits eight triples as CEU edges Olivarez to regain UCBL lead

ORLAN Wamar hit eight three-pointers as defending champion Centro Escolar University outlasted Olivarez College, 67-64, and regained the solo lead in the 2nd Universities and Colleges Basketball League at the Olivarez College gym in Parañaque City.

The 5-foot-8 Wamar finished with game-high 26 points as CEU scored its fifth straight win and 11th overall in 12 games, moving ahead of idle Colegio de San Lorenzo (10-1).

In the other game, Technological Institute of the Philippines ended a three-game skid with a 91-83 win over Bulacan State University.

The Engineers improved to 4-8.

“Credit goes to the players. They embraced my challenge that they need to step up in order for us to repeat over the Sea Lions,” said CEU coach Yong Garcia. “We struggled to make our usual shots but they were great defensively in the second half.”

Unlike in their first meeting where they controlled the match right from the start on the way to a 60-43 win, the Scorpions encountered rough sailing this time before finally dispatching the Sea Lions.

After a slow start that saw them fall behind by 10 points, the Scorpions wheeled their way back into the contest behind the sniping of Wamar before taking control of the game after the turn through their air-tight defense.

The Sea Lions had a chance to force overtime but Richmon Sunga missed his three-point attempt as time expired.
