Manila All-Stars score two big victories to take early lead in MBT seniors
The Manila All Stars overpower the Navotas Bida.

MANILA scored two big wins on opening week to show the way in the Metropolitan Basketball Tournament seniors competition.

The All-Stars defeated 16-and-under champion Marikina, 79-72, at the Makati Coliseum then clobbered Navotas, 113-71, at home at the San Andres Sports Complex for the lead in the North Division.

Kimberly Olmoguiz of San Andres led the way for Manila with 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in just 18 minutes of play against Navotas.

Manila’s final score was the second highest output for a regulation game this season and the sixth biggest winning margin in the MBT, a two-month long meet backed by the Philippine Basketball Association, which has ‘Mobile App ng Bayan’ Barangay 143 as co-presentor and backed by Synergy 88 Spalding and DZRH.

Quezon City, still smarting from a stinging 92-91 overtime defeat to San Juan in the opening playdate, survived a furious Navotas rally, 89-80.

The QC Stars took control early with an opening 12-2 run, with Jefferson Comia scoring half of his team’s output during that stretch.

The Supremos trailed 38-8 but got to within four in the final 36 seconds before losing steam and allowing Quezon City to take the win with a 5-0 finish.

Comia wound up with 22 points

Paranaque, the 16-and-under runner-up, leads the South Division after an opening day win over Makati, 83-75, in the tournament also sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, World Balance and Higer Bus.

Las Piñas, Mandaluyong, Taguig, Pateros and a squad from MMDA are bracketed in the South Division with Paranaque and Makati, while Manila, QC, Navotas and Caloocan are in the North Division with San Juan and Valenzuela in the 24-and-under tournament also supported by Excellent Noodles, Nature’s Spring Water, 1-Pacman Partylist, Hopewell Sales Corp., Gatorade, Star Bread, Frabelle Foods, Regan Industrial Sales, Inc., Glitter.ph, Alcoplus, Primadonna and Archie’s Bespoke Bar + Grill.
