Kiefer Ravena makes transition to point guard as he prepares for jump to PBA
Kiefer Ravena says point guard was his natural position in high school, but he was turned into the combo guard position in college where he flourished as the go-to-guy of the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a UAAP career that produced two championships and the same number of MVP awards.

KIEFER Ravena is making a conscious effort to become a better point guard as he sees action in the commercial amateur basketball league PCBL while preparing for his jump to the professional ranks.

The two-time UAAP MVP had an impressive debut in the fledgling commercial league, finishing with 16 points, five assists, and three steals in Mighty Sports’ 79-70 win over Jumbo Plastic last Sunday.

Ravena was noticeably looking to pass more than look for his shot in his debut, saying that he is aiming to polish his playmaing skills in this PCBL Chairman’s Cup conference now that he is closer to making the jump to the PBA.

“I’m transitioning to that kind of position (point guard),” Ravena said. “I want to be consistent on what I play in. Minsan combo guard ako pero most of the time, point guard ang lalaruin ko dito sa Mighty.”

Ravena said point guard was his natural position in high school, but he was turned into the combo guard position in college where he flourished as the go-to-guy of the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a UAAP career that produced two championships and the same number of MVP awards.

So far, Mighty Sports coach Mike Fermin is impressed with how Ravena is developing into a good court general for the squad.

“Steady siya,” Fermin said. “Sobrang kontrolado ang laro. ‘Yun ‘yung upside ng bata. Hindi siya nagpa-panic. Never na nag-panic. He is always looking for his teammates. Siguro nag-tatransition na siya sa point guard.”

Now that he has returned to being a point guard, Ravena hopes to do well in the position in Mighty Sports' bid for the Chairman's Cup title.

“Eto naman ‘yung natural position ko. Nag-transition lang ako to combo guard to fit a system sa Ateneo. Masarap. Mas gusto ko ‘yung mag-set up ng mga kakampi. It’s always an instinct of mine to help my teammates look better on the court,” said Ravena.
