KIEFER Ravena isn’t surprised to see Kevin Ferrer get a call to join Gilas Pilipinas in its weekly practice session in preparation for next year’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Ravena knows for a fact national team coach Tab Baldwin has his eyes set on the University of Santo Tomas stalwart ever since he became part of the Gilas cadets squad that won the cage gold in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

“Honestly, I wasn’t surprised. He was my runner-up sa MVP, but nung SEA Games pa lang, minamataan na siya ni coach Tab,” said Ravena of Ferrer during the formal launch of his website on Tuesday.

Ferrer joined Gilas in practice on Monday night at the Meralco gym for the first time - the second college player to come on board after Ravena, the back-to-back UAAP MVP who started attending the training session shortly after Ateneo’s Season 78 campaign came to an end.

Ferrer, who was named Mythical Five member in the just concluded seniors basketball season, is coming off a runner-up campaign with UST that saw the Tigers lose to Far Eastern University in the deciding Game Three of the finals.

Ravena was so impressed with Ferrer’s performance this season that he ‘shared’ the MVP award with his friend and batchmate during the awarding ceremony.

Aside from being one of the finest amateur players in the country today, Ravena also believes Ferrer has what it takes to excel in international basketball with his height, length, and his skill set.

“He is one of those players who are really fit for the international game. Like 6-4, 6-5, very long, very lanky, has the shooting touch of a guard, and somewhat has the strength of a power forward mixed in one body.

“Malaking bagay din siya para sa Pilipinas, so I wasn’t really surprised with him and Mac (Belo) included in the team,” said Ravena.
