THE basketball community is in mourning over the death of Jose Rizal University high school player Carl Jimwell ‘CJ’ Servillon, who passed away on Sunday night days after he collapsed during the Light Bombers’ game in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.

Servillon collapsed on the bench during a timeout in JRU’s match on Friday against De La Salle-Zobel. The game was halted and Servillion was rushed to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan but expired on Sunday. He was only 17 years old.

JRU coach Nat Gregorio said the team is shocked by the death, especially since they know Servillon was in top condition.

“During the timeout, sabi lang ng teammate niya, nahihilo siya. He collapsed right away,” said Gregorio.

Gregorio said, as of posting time, the cause of death has yet to be determined.

“Actually, we still do not know. Hindi pa nakakarating ’yung  findings sa amin. We are still waiting for the report. Kahit parents niya, wala pa rin idea,” said Gregorio.

Gregorio said the team will still discuss on whether they will continue to play in the Filoil as well as other tournaments.

“We are still going to talk about it kung ano ’yung magiging best for the rest of the team. Pero in the meantime, we are still in the state of shock regarding sa nangyari sa bata. We are not expecting na mangyayari ‘yun,” said Gregorio.
