Escandor, Doromal star as Ateneo de Davao turns back Davao Jones Academy to gain share of lead

FRANCIS Gabriel Escandor and Axel Doromal continued their fine play as Ateneo de Davao downed Davao Jones Academy, 91-68, on Sunday to grab a share of the lead in The Royal Mandaya Cup at the Davao City Recreation Center.

The Blue Knights scored their second win in as many games, joining Holy Child School of Davao in the lead in the six-team tournament.

The six-foot-two Escandor, heftier in his first year at Senior High, dropped 15 points as he asserted his presence in the paint and showed deft touch from the distance.

“He has tremendously improved and with Axel in the line-up, we have a very potent combination who understand their roles with the team,” said Ateneo de Davao coach Miggy Solitaria.

Doromal, acquired from rival Assumption College of Davao, paced the Blue Knights for the second straight game with 18 points. He also had a team-high 14 in his debut with Ateneo in the 75-66 win over Ford Academy on Saturday.

Multi-titled Holy Child served notice of its strength after cruising past Assumption College, 75-61.

Ford Academy scored a 69-68 win over Jose Maria College in a battle of opening day losers.

Ford now totes a 1-1 win-loss record in a tie with Assumption while, JMC at 0-2 shares the cellar with Davao Jones.
