Colegio de San Lorenzo asserts mastery over Diliman College to gain share of UCBL lead

COLEGIO de San Lorenzo leaned on the stellar performances from backups James Alvarado and Charles Callano to assert its mastery over Diliman College, 62-57, and gain a piece of the lead in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 2 on Saturday at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.

With Benin Soulemane Chabi hobbling due to a sprained ankle, Alvarado and Callano came to the Griffins’ rescue as they combined for nine points down the stretch to frustrate the Blue Dragons once again.

Without pro-bound center Jon Gabriel, the Griffins showed great determination as they scuttled Diliman’s late fightback to tie reigning champion Centro Escolar for the lead at 7-1.

“Life won’t be any easier without Gabriel. Soulemane is also hurting. That’s why I told him to focus on rebounding and playing defense. Let your teammates do the scoring,” said CdSL coach Boni Garcia, who got 12 points and 15 rebounds from the athletic 6-foot-6 Chabi Yo.

Meantime, Olivarez College also repeated over Technological Institute of the Philippines, 80-70, for its fourth straight and 6th overall in 9 games – thanks to the deadly duo of Jose Navarro and Chris Lalata.

Navarro and Lalata combined for 28 points while Dwight Saguiguit had 12 points – all coming from beyond the arc.

Veteran Jorey Napoles paced the Engineers with 31 points.

Also shining for the Griffins was Gelo Sablan who tallied seven points, nine rebounds and five assists off the bench.

Senegalese big man Adama Diakhite had another solid showing of 19 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and four blocks, but his efforts went down the drain as the Blue Dragons slipped to 7-2.

A big disappointment for the Blue Dragons was Rick Gerero as he could only finished with six points on a horrible 3-of 16 shooting from the field. He also missed a potential game-winning triple that went way short inside the final 20 seconds.
