NU Bullpups sweep Jumbo Cup elims, gain twice-to-beat edge in Final Four

NATIONAL University completed an eight-game sweep of the elims with a 97-70 drubbing of University of the East even as Chiang Kai Shek College took the last semis berth in the 2nd PCABL Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Cup at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City.

John Clemente scored seven of his 15 points in the opening period that saw the Bullpups race to a 29-13 advantage.

There was no letup for the former UAAP champions from there with Neil Tolentino and Winderlich Loyola scoring eight points each in the second quarter to push the Junior Warriors deeper into a 20-point hole, 54-34.

Aside from Clemente, four other NU players scored in double figures.

As the No. 1 team at the end of the elims, NU enjoys a twice-to-beat advantage when it battles No. 4 Chiang Kai Shek College in the next round of the event backed by Smart Telecom, Advance Solutions Inc., Hapee Toothpaste, Fed Seal, Powerhouse, CW Home Depot and Powerbest Marketing.

The Blue Dragons finished tied for fourth to fifth places with University of the Philippines Integrated School at 4-3 despite absorbing an 80-64 loss to the Ateneo Eaglets.

By virtue of the winner-over-other rule, CKSC secured the last ticket to the semis round where they will have an unenviable task of facing the mighty Bullpups.

Ateneo, which finished No.2 in the elims with a 7-1 record, collides with No. 3 Far Eastern University in the other semis pairing after the Baby Tamaraws clobbered Hope Christian High School, 79-43.
