AFTER more than three decades of its pioneering clinics which have produced many of the country’s top basketball superstars, Best Center (Basketball Efficiency and Scientific Training Center) embarks on yet another ambitious project when it organizes the country’s biggest 3x3 basketball tournament for kids next month.

Best Center founding president and former national coach and player Nicanor Jorge announced the Best Center-Fiba 3-On-3 Tournament will be held November 15 at the Ateneo College Covered Courts with more than 500 players 15-years old and below and 12-years and under from Manila, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Baguio, Lucena and other nearby provinces, taking part.

Jorge said the event is also open to interested teams. They can call the Best Center office at 372-30-65 and 4116260 if they wish to participate. Deadline for submission of entries is on October 25.

“This is our biggest project yet,” Jorge said. “3-On-3 is now the most popular urban sport in the world nowadays, according to an International Olympic Committee (IOC) survey. It is now being considered for inclusion as a regular sport in the Olympics.”

“On our part, Milo-Ready to Drink is giving the event its full backing because we believe in the youth as a primary driving force in our hopes to win the country’s first Olympic gold medal. Who knows, our future 3-On-3 Olympians would come from this tournament?” said Cherine Capadocia, sales and marketing executive of the sponsoring Milo Ready to Drink.

According to Jorge, Best Center is designing the event to feature two age groups -15 and 12-Under - to comprise 128 teams (64 teams per age group), with four players each.

More than 120 games will be played simultaneously in eight courts. The matches will be officiated by referees from Nabro (National Amateur Basketball Referees Association).

There will be no coaches allowed to calls plays, according to Jorge. No timeouts will also be called, allowing fast-paced matches in accordance with international rules.

Kobe Paras, Andre Caracut, Thirdy Ravena and Terence Romeo are the more popular 3-On-3 gamers, among other Best Center graduates.
