Batang Gilas survives fright from India, finishes Fiba Asia U18 in seventh place

BATANG Gilas defeated India, 67-64, on Sunday to finish in seventh place at the end of its campaign in the Fiba Asia Under-18 Championship in Tehran, Iran on Sunday.

Jolo Mendoza scored 15 points while Fran Yu added 14 points, including the free throws with 38 seconds to play that enabled Batang Gilas to weather a late comeback by India.

The Batang Gilas cagers were up, 64-54, with 5:11 left in the fourth but their lead was cut to a point, 65-64, before Yu's two free throws.

Still, the finish was two rungs lower than their fifth-place finish in the 2014 Fiba-Asia Under-18 Championship.

The Batang Gilas cagers got off to a 26-14 lead at the end of the first quarter to take command early before India unleashed a third-quarter attack to come to within three points, 54-51.

The Philippines beat India in more convincing fashion, 105-82, in the preliminaries.
