Batang Gilas vents ire on HK to book clash vs Japan in Fiba Asia U16 quarterfinals

THE Philippines advanced into the quarterfinals of the Fiba Under-16 Asian Championship after defeating Hong Kong, 103-61, in Foshan, China on Thursday.

A day after dropping a 30-point decision against Australia at the end of the preliminary round, Batang Gilas vented their ire on Hong Kong as they opened an early 18-4 lead halfway through the first period and never looked back.

Batang Gilas will face Japan in the quarterfinal round slated at 6 p.m. at the Foshan Lingnan Mingzhu Gymnasium. Japan went unbeaten in three matches in Group D.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Philippines with RC Calimag and King Balaga finishing with 12 points each.

Kai Sotto atoned for his struggles in the Australia match as he had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Batang Gilas. Rence Padrigao, Geo Chiu, and Terrence Fortea each had 11 points for the Philippine youth squad that led by as many as 42 points.
