Ateneo de Davao rallies in fourth to beat Assumption and top Gaisano Cup
Ateneo de Davao makes it two out of three wins in title matchups against Assumption.

DAVAO CITY — Dom Cane scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as Ateneo de Davao University scored a come-from-behind 87-77 victory over Assumption College of Davao to claim the 2016 Gaisano Grand Cup juniors division championship on Monday night at the SkyGym.

The Blue Knights trailed the Warriors, 56-62, after three quarters but outscored their rivals, 31-15, in the fourth to win the decider of the best-of-three series.

It was a huge game for Cane after Ateneo top gunner Francis Gabriel Escandor was called his fourth foul in the second period and saw limited action after that.

Marvin Ion Angeles, who was named to the Mythical Team along with Escandor, scored 15 points for Ateneo.

Leading scorer Cris Marvin Vistal fouled out with still 6:40 remaining after scoring 12 points. Jose Miguel de Loyola led the Warriors with 17 but the usually steady Axel Doromal could only chip in six.

“We could not ask for more. It’s an advanced Christmas gift,” said Ateneo coach Miggy Solitaria.

Ateneo now holds a 2-1 record in finals encounters this year over ACD. The two first met in the Matina Enclaves Cup won by Ateneo and in the 2015 Davao Association of Catholic Schools championship won by ACD.
