Ateneo de Davao turns back Assumption College to take juniors lead in Gaisano Grand Cup
Francis Escandor shows the way for Ateneo de Davao with 17 points.

DAVAO CITY — Francis Gabriel Escandor scored 17 points as Ateneo de Davao beat Assumption College of Davao, 79-64, on Saturday to take the juniors division lead in the 12th Gaisano Grand Cup basketball tournament at the Gaisano SkyGym.

The six-foot-one Escandor helped Blue Knights exact revenge over their tormentors in last week’s Davao Association of Catholic Schools tournament.

Matt Martinez scored five points in a 15-7 first period for Ateneo de Davao. The Blue Knights padded the lead to 35-22 at the half and was never threatened.

Escandor had 10 at the half, while Jethro Taculin hit two triples.

Taculin finished with 14 while Dom Cane added 11 for Ateneo.

Axel Doromal led the Warriors with 19 points.

The Blue Knights and the Warriors have both won a tournament this year, with Ateneo topping the Matina Enclaves Inter-School Tournament and Assumption College of Davao taking the DACS crown.

The Gaisano Grand Cup is the biggest school-based basketball tournament in Davao City with 94 teams seeing action.
