Veteran basketball coaches, former Premier League scout to conduct coaching clinics in Tubod and Tacloban
Coach Ariel Vangiardia of the ABL champion Malaysia Dragons will help train coaches in the provinces.

VETERAN basketball coaches and a former Premier League scout will conduct coaching clinics to help boost sports in the provinces.

Focused on teachers and local coaches, the project starts on Monday at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao De Norte and will run until Wednesday. The team will then shift to Bethel International School in Tacloban for another training session from May 27 to 29.

Westports Malaysia Dragons coach and Blackwater assistant coach Ariel Vanguardia and Dragons assistant coach Tino Pinat is part of the program for basketball. Lee Anthony Hawkins, a former English Premier League scout and a former player trainee for Southampton FC, will be teaching football.

The ‘Training of Trainer’ system is organized by ASA Group and supported by the United States Embassy.

“This project is primarily for local coaches and teachers. What we are doing as ASA is we go to remote and some are actually conflict areas working with local coaches and local teachers that don’t have the opportunity to go into coaching clinics. We are reaching out to them, building their capacity and empowering them to become ASA trainers,” said Lee Anthony Hawkins, also the program’s technical advisor,

“What they will now do is deliver the ASA training curriculum to the youth,” he added.

The ASA program is also focused on building resilience, conflict resolution, and life skills education to the coaches and teachers.

ASA Foundation has been running such programs for 15 years in Asia beginning in Indonesia but this will be the first time it will be held in the Philippines.
