'Pudgy' Pasaol can be a beast once he gets in tip-top shape, says new UE coach

GIVEN Alvin Pasaol’s skills, new University of the East coach Joe Silva believes the Red Warriors star can still become an even better player if he gets in better shape.

“He hasn’t reached his full potential yet. I want him to get smarter. I want him to get stronger,” said Silva of Pasaol, who he described as 'kinda on the pudgy side.'

Weight issues have not been a problem for Pasaol, who scored a modern-day UAAP high of 49 points against La Salle and even earned a place in the Mythical Five despite UE's woeful record.

Imagine what Pasaol is capable of when trimmer, Silva said.

“He is kinda on the pudgy side, dami na niyang ginagawa. What more kung talagang kundisyon siya. He’ll be a beast. That’s what I’m trying to convince him to do,” said Silva.

After just a month together, Pasaol said he likes Silva’s approach to the team.

“Okay din ‘yung pakikitungo ni coach Joe sa amin, ‘yung assistant coaches ni coach Joe, tinuturuan talaga niya kami. Sobrang ganda ng sistema na pinapakita ni coach Joe. Ang ganda i-adapt,” said Pasaol.

On Tuesday, Pasaol proved he can match up against the top college and amateur players in the land when he scored 22 points in UE’s 63-61 loss to the Gilas Pilipinas cadets.

The UE star was proud to see the Red Warriors stand toe-to-toe with the Gilas cadets.

“Good fight ‘yung linaban namin. Gilas team eh. Selection ‘yun. Malalakas talaga sila. Credit sa mga teammates ko na talagang binigay nila ‘yung effort nila in this game,” said Pasaol.

“Hindi kagaya last year na kapag malalaki kalaban, magaling lang kami sa una. Ngayon, hanggang fourth quarter na-maintain namin although natalo kami. Pero sobrang lakas ng Gilas,” said Pasaol.

When asked what changed for UE from last season, Pasaol said: “Siguro mas kilala namin mga teammates namin at nandoon ‘yung trust sa teammates. Hindi lang Philip Manalang, Alvin Pasaol ang UE. Lahat kami kailangan mag-contribute.”
