China cruises to semis, sends Perlas Pilipinas to classification phase of Fiba Women’s Asia Cup

PERLAS Pilipinas suffered a 117-43 beating at the hands of former champion China to formally bow out of contention in the Fiba Women's Asia Women's Cup on Thursday in Bangalore, India.

The Filipina cagebelles absorbed their fourth straight loss and will play in the classification phase with three of the other bottom teams in the eight-nation tournament that serves as qualifier for the 2018 Fiba Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain.

The top four teams advance to next year's world championship.

Perlas has yet to score a win in its Level 1 debut, losing to world powers Japan, Australia, and South Korea in the group phase.

Afril Bernardino scored 11 points, while Camille Sambile added 10 for the team whose campaign is being backed by Ever Bilena.

"We're Ok. We're expecting naman na mahirapan talaga kami sa mga kalaban dito," said coach Pat Aquino in a short chat with after the quarterfinals loss.

In other results, South Korea advanced to the semis with a 64-59 win over New Zealand, while Australia routed North Korea, 81-48.

Defending champion Japan and Chinese Taipei dispute the remaining semis berth.
