THE  47th season of the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association opens on Saturday at the Makati Coliseum.

Led by host St. Jude Catholic School and five-time senior basketball champion Centro Escolar University, the country’s first and only tri-level league for women will highlight Filipino-Chinese culture in the opening ceremony that starts at 10 a.m.

The league has an intact roster of 16 member schools.

The 47th season’s theme is “Women on Fire. A Legacy of Passion.”

Volleyball star Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker.

Also invited is Rosc Teotico, former University of Asia & the Pacific basketball team captain who is now part of the technical committee of the Philippine Basketball Association women’s league.

Three basketball matches will follow the opening rites, starting with the St. Jude-St. Stephen’s High School juniors game at 12 p.m.

CEU starts its bid for a sixth straight seniors title against Philippine Women’s University at 1:30 p.m. and Miriam College faces UA&P at 3 p.m.

St. Jude looks to bag a title this time after falling short last season.

“Our students are known bookworms and excel academically but we strike a balance by encouraging them to be involved in sports,” said St. Jude school director Rev. Fr. Vicente Rayco on Wednesday.

“We want to enjoy both school and sports.”

Other member schools are 46th season overall champions Rizal Technological University (seniors) and St. Paul College Pasig (midgets), five-time midgets basketball champion De La Salle Zobel, Angelicum College, Assumption College, defending junior basketball champion Chiang Kai Shek College, La Salle College Antipolo, Poveda, San Beda College Alabang and St. Scholastica’s College.

Miriam won the overall junior title last season.

The volleyball and futsal events of the league supported by TV5, Mikasa, Molten, Goody, BaliPure and City Lady socks, get underway on Sunday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum and UA&P gym, respectively.
