TEN teams are set to see action in the 2017 Republica Cup basketball tournament that kicks off on Monday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.

Six teams in Mighty Sports, Hobe Macway Travel, Racal Ceramica, AMA Online Education, Baliwag and San Ildefonso have signed up for the commercial division, while AMA, Arellano, Bulacan State University (BulSU), and University of the Philippines will see action in the collegiate division.

More than the competition, Malolos mayor Christian Natividad said the tournament was organized to create awareness of the history of the city being the site where the First Philippine Republic was established on January 23, 1899.

“This is an advocacy. We are trying to reach out to every sector for one single advocacy which is giving justice to the greatness of Republic Day. That is our Philippine Republic, the first in Asia and it happened in Malolos City, pero walang nakakaalala,” said Natividad.

UP and BulSU open hostilities on Monday, 5:30 p.m. at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center, while Hobe Macway Travel goes up against Mighty Sports at 7:30 p.m.

Action resumes on Thursday with AMA taking on Arellano at 5:30 p.m., while Racal Ceramica battles AMA at 7:30 p.m.
