OSCAR ‘Dodong’ Bascon, a pillar of basketball in Negros, passed away on Wednesday in Bacolod City due to cancer. He was 86.
Bascon’s son and and Negros Occidental board member Tinto Bascon confirmed the news to Inside Bacolod.
Bascon is best known for his contributions in Negros basketball, paving the way for a host of Bacolod players such as Rudy Distrito, Yves Dignadice, Noli Locsin, Donking Sasuman, Boyet Fernandez, and Reynel Hugnatan among others to be discovered in the big leagues through the Negros Basketball Association it organized.
The Negros Basketball Association also kept the sport alive in the province as it also ran tournaments from the senior, college, and high school age groups.
The sportsman-hotelier was also part of the management of the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) ballclub Negros Slashers, the squad that produced the league’s first-ever MVP in John Ferriols in 1998.
Bascon also ventured into other sports. Over the past few years, he also supported marathoner Eric Panique in his training and competitions.
