Teytey Teodoro responds to JRU coach Meneses' challenge with killer threes vs Stags

FOR the past few games, Teytey Teodoro took a backseat to his teammates and it seemed to work for a Jose Rizal University that went on to post back-to-back victories.

But when the Heavy Bombers needed their main man to take charge, Teodoro obliged.

Teodoro scored 19 points, firing seven in the final five minutes of the game, as the Heavy Bombers came up with a 73-62 victory over hosts San Sebastian Stags in another edition of NCAA on Tour in Season 93 on Thursday.

Used sparingly in previous outings, Teodoro showed why he remains the focal point of the JRU offense. With the game tied at 58-all, Teodoro unloaded back-to-back three-pointers - the last from way, way out - to jumpstart a game-ending 15-4 run.

"Siguro nagising na si Teytey. Sabi ko sa kanya, to be part of the rotation, you have to earn everything," said JRU head coach Vergel Meneses. "If you want respect, pagtrabahuhan mo yan. If you want more minutes, you have to work for it."

The fiery JRU coach, however, reiterated his confidence in his star guard, saying there are a few people who can reach his level when he's on a zone.

"If he wants to play, nobody can stop him. They were down by two, a basket by (Aaron) Bordon to tie the game then, back-to-back threes by Teytey, yun ang nag-seal sa amin," said Meneses.

Teodoro admitted he stepped back the past couple of games but was happy to see other players take charge, like veterans Ervin Grospe and Jed Mendoza. Rookies Aaron Bordon and Abdul Sawat also made the most of their spot minutes in their surge.

"Si Grospe at Jed naman talagang kaya nila umopensa e. Mas natutuwa ako sa mga rookies namin kasi, naglalaro sila ng mas maganda," said Teodoro.

"Mas lalawak siguro yung opensa namin at mas mahihirapan sila sa amin."

But just like any other star, Teodoro was just thankful to finally get out of his slump just when his team needed him most.

"Last two games ko medyo bad games, siguro na-timing na kailangan ko na mag-step up. Salamat lang na maganda yung nilaro ko kung kailan kailangan ako ng team," he said.
