Teytey Teodoro a potential PBA star if he improves on defense, says Meneses

JOSE Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses believes Teytey Teodoro has all the makings to be a star in the PBA someday, if only the Heavy Bomber gunner can improve on his defense.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanya, 'Dumepensa ka, you’ll make it big.' Maniwala ka sa akin, mapupunta ka sa PBA,” said Meneses after JRU won over Letran, 75-68, in overtime on Tuesday.

Meneses, a former PBA MVP, said he has even heard from coaches in the PBA about their interest in Teodoro. But according to the ‘Aerial Voyager,’ the same coaches in awe of his ward agree that the high-scoring JRU guard needs to display the same effort on defense.

“What I’ve heard sa mga coaches sa PBA is fan sila. But the problem is ‘yung depensa. [But] the effort was there. He can go to the big leagues kasi ‘yung puso niya andoon,” said Meneses.

Teodoro’s play was once again in full display on Tuesday when he scored eight of his 23 points in overtime to lead the Heavy Bombers in taking down the Knights. It was JRU’s third straight victory after an inconsistent first round.

However, Meneses lamented Teodoro’s decision during the final seconds of regulation to pass the ball instead of attempting the game-winning shot.

“Hindi siya ‘yun, ‘yung ganung tira, hindi siya ‘yun. Eh fan tayo nito kaya nga nasa akin ‘yan,” said Meneses.

Teodoro said he took it upon himself to take over in the extra period after being passive near the end of regulation.

“Before mag-overtime, bad decision ako eh. Nung nag-overtime, chinallenge ako ni coach na dapat tinira ko ‘yun. Kaya during the start ng overtime, ako na ‘yung tumira. Thank you kay God na pumapasok,” said Teodoro.
