Red Cubs two wins away from elims sweep in NCAA juniors after win over Mapua

SAN Beda moved two wins away from a sweep of the NCAA Season 91 juniors basketball elimination round after beating Mapua, 89-84, on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Red Cubs, eyeing a seventh straight NCAA title, improved to 16-0 (win-loss) after overcoming a 39-48 halftime deficit against the Red Robins in a rematch of last year’s finals.

Evan Nelle had 21 points while Samuel Abu Hijle added 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Red Cubs, who can clinch an outright finals berth - plus thrice-to-beat advantage - if they complete an 18-game sweep.

The Red Robins now own a 14-2 win-loss slate.

In other matches, Arellano beat Letran, 86-76, with Guilmer Dela Torre contributing 20 points and Carlo Abadeza adding 15 points and 15 rebounds.

The Braves improved to 10-5 while the Squires dropped to 5-10.

Jose Rizal University beat Perpetual Help, 77-51, for only the Light Bombers’ second win in 16 outings. The Altalettes are now 0-16.
