SAN Beda handed Mapua its first defeat, 87-81, on Friday morning in the NCAA Season 93 juniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Evan Nelle tallied 27 points, making 5 of 8 shots from the 3-point line, and made six assists as the Red Cubs improved their win-loss card to 5-2.

Mapua, which beat La Salle Greenhills in a battle of unbeaten teams on Tuesday, fell to 6-1 but remained on top of the standings.

San Beda coach JB Sison stressed the need to play with a sense of urgency against the same team they lost to during last season's championship series.

"Mas importante 'yung game kesa sa kanila kasi for them, they are still number one even though they lost," said Sison. "We are chasing number one and two kaya mas kailangan namin itong panalong ito."

San Beda hit 12 of 29 three-point attempts as Mapua went 0-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Peter Alfaro scored 15 points, while Ain Obenza had 12 points - each scoring two triples in the contest.

Clint Escamis and Will Gozum had 19 points each for the Red Robins.
