WITH juniors standout Andrei Caracut bound for La Salle in the UAAP, San Beda has turned its focus to the eight graduating Red Cubs and the huge pool of players in the training pool as the school begins to form a squad for the next NCAA basketball tournament.

Marc Diputado, Niko Abatayo, Norrish Decapia, Kenneth Alas, Mark Framil, Evan Furaque, Gerald Zamora, and Ayron Apolto are the outgoing Red Cubs aside from Caracut, a juniors standout who also suited up for the Batang Gilas national junior team.

Making coach Mike Jarin’s job tougher is the surplus of players in Team B who are also battling for spots in San Beda’s NCAA squad. Lions team manager Jude Roque said they have almost 30 players in the training pool.

“We are still evaluating the junior players, but we have plans for all of them,” Jarin told on Tuesday, although he declined to mention names.

“Actually ang dami naming players,” he admitted. “Sa Team B namin, karamihan nun, galing juniors din.”

And all of them are fighting for just a handful of spots in the NCAA squad.

Four roster spots were opened following the departure of Kyle Pascual, twins Anthony and David Semerad, and Jaypee Mendoza after last season, and candidates can still battle for places before the lineup is finalized prior to the NCAA tournament.

“Unfair naman kung ilalagay namin sila (graduating juniors) lahat dun (Team B) tapos hindi sila magagamit,” Roque said. “So siguro kung merong kukuha sa kanila na ibang school na ila-lineup sila, we can let them go. Pero kung hindi naman, they’re welcome to join us.”
