RANDY Alcantara is set to assume the head-coaching job at Letran, sources told Spin.ph.

The Mapua juniors head coach and an assistant of Atoy Co in the seniors team, Alcantara, according to the source, is set to accept the Letran job, months after the position was left vacant by Aldin Ayo.

Pressed for comment by Spin.ph, Letran athletic director Fr. Vic Calvo neither confirmed nor denied Alcantara’s hiring, saying he has yet to receive information related to the head-coaching post.

However, sources said the former Mapua Cardinal is the choice of the Letran selection panel.

Alcantara, a former standout in the PBL and MBA who was picked by Shell in the third round of the talent-laden 1998 PBA rookie draft, will take over a Letran program fresh from winning the Season 91 men's basketball crown against San Beda, ending a decade-long title drought.

However, the Knights found themselves without a coach months after winning the title when Ayo accepted an offer to coach De La Salle in the UAAP.

Under Alcantara, rhe Red Robins became one of the premier high school programs in the country. Alcantara led the Red Robins to a finals appearance in Season 90, losing to San Beda in the finals.

The next head coach will take over a Letran squad that will no longer have Mark Cruz and Kevin Racal, the two pillars of the Knights side that became the Cinderella team of last season.
