IF you love throwbacks, these games are for you.

PBA stars from yesteryears are set to return to the court and relive their rivalries when a pair of benefit matches pitting Ginebra against Purefoods and Alaska against San Miguel are played when the league gives way to Gilas Pilipinas' campaign in the Fiba World Cup qualifiers.

The matches, to be played either on September 9 or 16 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, will be the first major project of the newly formed Samahan ng mga Dating Propesyonal na Basketbolista ng Pilipinas with full backing from the PBA Commissioner's Office.

The project aims to raise funds for the medical needs of former PBA players.

According to Commissioner Willie Marcial, the players' association will organize the players to be involved in the two matches while the league will take care of the promotion and operations.

Former Crispa superstar Atoy Co has been named the president of their newly formed foundation. His former teammate, Philip Cezar, is vice president, former Toyota player Ed Cordero is the secretary, Allan Caidic is the treasurer while Alvin Patrimonio, Kenneth Duremdes, Jojo Lastimosa, Pido Jarencio and Art dela Cruz make up the board.

The pro league has held legends games in the past, the most memorable being the Crispa vs Toyota reunion game of 2003 which the latter won on a winning play involving estranged teammates Mon Fernandez and Robert Jaworski.

Fernandez and Jaworski should be part of this event as well.

Jaworski was the playing-coach of the Ginebra teams that played epic matches against a Purefoods side led by Patrimonio in the nineties. On the other hand, Fernandez was part of the SMB team that won a grand slam in 1989.
