SAN Beda survived a late rally by San Sebastian, 92-81, on Thursday to gain a share of the lead in the 91st NCAA seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions scored their fifth straight win by overcoming a 16-0 fourth-quarter San Sebastian run that saw San Beda’s huge lead trimmed to just one point.

Ola Adeogun had 28 points and 14 rebounds, Art de la Cruz scored 13 and Ryusei Koga added 12, making key shots down the stretch to help the Lions hold on.

San Beda moves into a tie for top spot with Letran with a 7-1 win-loss record going into its final first-round game against Arellano on Tuesday.

“We went with our system when we got that lead so we can’t afford that,” said San Beda coach Jamike Jarin, referring to the near-meltdown. “We can’t afford to put our guards down.”

San Beda led, 78-61, at the start of the fourth period but San Sebastian was able to close in 78-77.

The Stags would again cut the deficit to 79-80 before De la Cruz, Koga, and the Red Lions finished the game on a 12-2 tear.

Donald Tankoua scored all of his 11 points in the second quarter that saw the Red Lions build a 53-39 halftime lead. Dan Sara added 10 for San Beda.
