AS ARELLANO aims to catch up with the rest of the pack in the NCAA Season 93, coach Jerry Codinera is hoping that he has finally found the perfect complementary piece to Kent Salado this season in Michael Canete.

Canete proved that he can put up significant numbers in a crucial game after finishing with a career-best 27 points to go along 10 rebounds in their narrow 84-79 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday.

Facing a must-win situation, Canete stepped up when it mattered the most, showing his versatility by making damage in the paint and on the perimeter.

With five games to go and the Chiefs’ fate hanging in the balance, consistency from Canete from this point forward will be a big relief for the Chiefs.

“Yun lang sometimes he’s just getting assigned to an import, to a post player, a good player. Kanina talaga sabi ko talaga kanina, aggressive siya dapat sa offense. Mas clear cut siguro yung trabaho niya,” said Codinera.

“At least si Mike now malaking point output niya. So talagang ang laking tulong sa amin yun. He completed really our offense tonight. Prepare every game and focus what’s in front of us,” he added.

For Canete, it’s all about the confidence that Codinera still has in him amid some games where he played below par.

“Sana matuloy tuloy ko lang to kasi malaking bagay na alam ko naman na may tiwala si coach Jerry sa akin,” said Canete after the match.

But more than his career-best effort, Canete was just happy to help his team finally get back into the winning track as they continue their uphill climb to the Final Four.

“Sobrang masaya ako kasi panalo kami ngayon. Sinusunod lang namin yung pinapagawa ni coach sa amin.”
