ALLWELL Oraeme was again a tower of power underneath after grabbing 30 rebounds for the second straight game as Mapua extended its winning streak to six by turning back Arellano, 81-76, Friday in the NCAA Season 91 seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Oraeme matched his rebounding output against Letran on Tuesday, but also got ample support from the rest of the Cardinals, who raised their win-loss record to 10-5 and tie the Chiefs for fourth place in the standings.

For good measure, Oraeme also had 15 points.

Exequiel Biteng had 15 points, Justin Serrano added 14, while Mark Brana finished with 11 in a balanced-scoring for Mapua, which remained undefeated in the second round.

The Cardinals used a 14-2 run to pull away from the Chiefs in the final quarter to grab a 76-68 lead after playing catch-up three-fourths of the way. That included a game-tying basket by Brana and a go-ahead three-point play by Serrano, 69-66.

Mapua overcame a 33-43 deficit in the first half after scoring just 10 points in the second quarter.

“It was kinda sluggish to say the least,” said Mapua assistant coach Ed Cordero, sitting in for suspended head coach Atoy Co. “But in the second half, we got rid of it.”

Mapua also won despite top scorer Josan Nimes playing only eight minutes as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Michael Salado had 17 points while Jiovani Jalalon had 16 and 11 rebounds for the Chiefs, who lost Donald Gumaru in the end game after landing hard on the floor.

Gumaru was carried out on a stretcher later on.
