JOSE Rizal University trounced last year’s runner-up Arellano, 78-61, on opening day of the NCAA on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Heavy Bombers dominated most of the match, with Cameroonian bigman Abdoul Poutouochi coming up with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

“We just played a good game,” said JRU head coach Vergel Meneses. “We were moving the ball and looking for an open man.”

JRU actually had a bad shooting day, making only 30 of its 77 shots.

Tey Teodoro had 11 points but shot 0-of-8 from three-point range.

But JRU stepped up on the defensive end, outscoring Arellano, 21-9, in the second quarter to pull off the rout.

“Although we weren’t making most of our shots, we made it up on the defensive end,” said Meneses.

Michael Salado had 15 points for Arellano, which only got four points from Southeast Asian Games campaigner Jio Jalalon.
