JOEL Cagulangan capped La Salle Greenhills’ brave comeback in hitting the go-ahead basket as the Greenies downed the Arellano University Braves, 79-77, on Friday in the NCAA Season 93 juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Cagulangan sparked the Greenies’ fourth quarter rally after trailing for the most part of the game, hitting a jumper in the 6:39 mark to tie the game, 63-63.

After a series of deadlocks, Cagulangan secured the win by banking a lay-up with just two seconds left that sealed the final score.

“I just asked for honest defense all through out. We’ve been the gambling the whole first half that’s why we gave up a big lead, but at the end, good thing we got the win,” Greenies coach Marvin Buenvenida said.

Joshua Marcos topscored for LSGH with 15 points, while Ladis Lepalam chipped in 12 markers. Cagulangan and Jesmar Pedrosa also added 10 points apiece for the Greenies.

Buenvenida commended the players for stepping up in the game, especially those coming off the bench like Greenies’ top scorer Marcos.

“Joel is Joel. He knows what to do, he’s been closing out games for us so that’s good maturity for him. For Marcos, he had a good step up and it’s been a while since he delivered this well for the team. Same with Lapalan, I told him I would give him minutes if he delivers well,” he said.

LSGH now has a 7-2 win-loss record in the first round of the tournament, while Arellano settled with a 4-4 win-loss card.

Aaron Fermin scored 32 big points and 17 rebounds for the Braves but it was not enough to clinch the victory against the Greenies.
