One less star for NCAA All-Stars as San Beda's Baser Amer to sit out as a 'precaution'

NOT taking any chances, Baser Amer will not be suiting up for the East team in the maiden NCAA All-Star Game on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

The San Beda star point guard suffered a mild concussion during the Red Lions’ 53-64 loss to Letran on Wednesday, the last day of the first round.

That has prompted Lions coach Boyet Fernandez, who will also handle the East squad, to rule out his prized ward from the midseason extravaganza as a precaution.

“He still has pains on his neck. May konting sakit ng ulo pa,” Fernandez said of the Davao native on the eve of the charity exhibition match pitting some of the country’s top collegiate basketball standouts.

Amer, though, could attend as a spectator if given clearance by doctors.

Fernandez said it remains to be seen whether Amer can also play right away for the Red Lions, who start their second-round campaign on Wednesday against Mapua.

“It depends on his status. Hindi namin siya pipilitin kung hindi siya one-hundred percent.”

Asked if there will be an All-star replacement, Fernandez feels an injury should not take away Amer’s slot.

“(Amer) deserves to be there, but because he was injured kaya hindi siya makakapaglaro. Pero ibigay natin sa bata yung slot.”
