GABRIEL Dagangon came up with 14 points, hitting important baskets in crucial stretches in the second half, to help Perpetual Help edge Lyceum, 65-60, on Saturday in the NCAA men's basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

A 21-year-old first-year player, Dagangon delivered the numbers that the Altas’ Big Four had been asking for, boosting Perpetual Help to its sixth win in 10 outings and a share of third spot with Jose Rizal University and College of St. Benilde.

The Perpetual Help main men still came up with double-digit scores, with Justine Alano scoring 14 points, Juneric Baloria 12, and Earl Thompson and Harold Arboleda chipping in with 10 each.

But Altas coach Aric del Rosario was pleased to see one of his new guys chip in big.

“Expected ko naman ’yun kasi magaling naman talaga sila, ’yun nga lang di pa sanay sa laban,” said the 74-year-old Del Rosario, who also got a fine performance from seldom-used Flash Sadiwa, who had five points in six minutes of play.

“Ang sabi ko sa kanila next year kayo na papalit sa mga beterano kaya dapat masanay na kayo.”

Dagangon and Sadiwa combined with Thompson to give Perpetual Help a comfortable 10-point cushion, 50-40, to end the third quarter.

The Altas then went on to widen the gap halfway through the fourth, 61-46.

“Nilubos ko lang ang pag pasok ko sa loob ng court kasi pag nagkamali ako mahirap na baka 'yun pa ang dahilan ng pagkatalo," said Dagangon.

Dexter Zamora had 18 points, Joseph Gabayni scored 14 and Wilson Baltazar added 10 for the Pirates, who now hold an even record of 5-5.
