COLLEGE of Saint Benilde coach Gabby Velasco remained optimistic that the Blazers won’t be winless for long, as they enter the NCAA break to work on finding support for top gunner Carlo Young.

Young led Benilde in scoring after two games with 14 points, but he was limited to just nine in their loss to reigning champs Letran, 52-56.

“We need contributions, we need points from JJ Domingo more, Christian Fajarito, as well, kasi today si Carlo Young nadepensahan eh. Siguro, we need to go on other options,” said Velasco.

Velascso will put the two-week break of the league to give way to the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament to good use in fixing other weaknesses of the team as well.

“We really have to do something here, dito sa long break namin,” he said. “Unang-una sa depensa, we really have to check our attitude, we really have to check defensive alignment namin, ‘yung defensive stops namin, we really have to put that in order”.

“Kailangan makita ng mga bata kung bakit kami nagkakaganito, bakit kami nasho-shootan. We also have to check our rebounding kasi there were crucial offensive rebounds ang Letran, and offensively we to correct our offensive formations namin,” added Velasco.

Velasco also rued the Blazers’ lack of defensive effort in what he considered was a missed opportunity to nab their first win in the game against Letran..

“Ang pangit kasi ng start namin eh, lalo na sa depensa. We really do not have the energy to play defense against them. Fourth quarter medyo nagising kami, we tried to catch up. Unfortunately, they took big shots,” Velasco said.

“Wala talaga kaming energy to sustain. We realized that medyo wala nang oras dun lang kami nagkaroon, pero from the start talagang struggle kami eh, talagang we were not focused, we were not hustling defensively,” he added. Gabriel Pe
