Al Chua set for crucial role in Letran sports development, says source

ALFRANCIS Chua now has a more defined role with Letran as he was formally introduced to the basketball team and some school officials early Friday morning in Intramuros.

According to a source, Chua was named as the Knights' Special Assistant to the Rector for Sports Development, formalizing his role with the school after reports of a partnership between the Knights and San Miguel Corporation surfaced last week.

Chua is also the director for SMC Sports while also being the team governor of Barangay Ginebra.

"Kwentuhan lang (yung meeting). Basketball team lang ang andun muna sa meeting," the source said.

“If ever daw kailangan ng tulong ng Knights, wag daw sila mahiya humingi ng tulong kanila Alfrancis," the source added.

Jeff Napa and his coaching staff were also there in the meeting alongside the whole basketball team with Chua giving words of encouragement to the Knights, assuring them of their support moving forward.

Also present in the meeting were Fr. Clarence Marquez O.P, the school rector, Fr. Vic Calvo O.P, Letran's athletic director and Jhennie Caldito-Villar, the school's director of the Office for Alumni and Public affairs.

The source also said that Chua brought along former Lyceum head coach and GlobalPort team manager Bonnie Tan to the meeting. Tan, the source added, has been named a consultant for Letran as well.

Tan, known as a close confidant to Chua, is expected to be the one to watch over the team, acting as Chua's point person to address the needs of the squad.

"Hindi daw kasi siya palaging makakapunta kaya inassign niya as 'point person' si Tan to coordinate with the Knights regarding concerns and needs," said the source.

Though it was just the basketball team who met with Chua, the source confirmed the earlier reports that the support will not only be for basketball but for the whole athletic program as well.
