JRU Bombers use late rally to ease past Stags and get back on winning track

JOSE Rizal University used a late run to beat San Sebastian, 68-62, on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 92 seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Heavy Bombers sealed the win with a 14-5 run, improving their win-loss record to 3-4.

JRU, which came off a loss to Letran, climbed to sixth place following the loss of Lyceum to Arellano.

Teytey Teodoro had 18 points including a triple that put the Heavy Bombers ahead, 63-59, with 1:36 left.

“Okay na rin na number six kaysa No. 9 or 10. I hope we make a run in the remaining games,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses.

Mark Dela Virgen had nine of his 12 points in the third quarter that saw JRU outscore San Sebastian, 23-14, to take the lead, 50-47, following a dismal first period where the Heavy Bombers only scored nine points.

San Sebastian reclaimed the lead after Ryan Costelo’s basket made it a 57-54 game with three minutes left in the fourth. The Stags, however, converted only one field goal the rest of the way.

Costelo finished with 18 points, while Allyn Bulanadi chipped in 15 points for the Stags, who have yet to win since their opening game against College of Saint Benilde.
