SAN Beda bounced back from a heartbreaking loss by venting its ire on Jose Rizal University, 77-60, as the reigning men’s basketball champion got back on track in the NCAA Season 100 on Saturday.
Big man Yukien Andrada had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in leading the Red Lions’ emphatic win just four days after being ambushed by Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in a 68-55 upset.
Bryan Sajonia also made up for his shooting struggles the previous game by finishing with 14 points, while James Payosing and Jomel Puno each had 13 for the Mendiola-based school which hiked back its record to 3-2 and tied University of Perpetual Help at third place.
“I told them na as defending champions, all the teams are targeting us. So we have to stay humble and just focus on the next game,” said coach Yuri Escueta of San Beda’s 13-point loss to EAC.
Added Andrada, “alam ko masakit yung talo namin sa EAC. And JRU is really a good team, so we have to respect them.”
The Red Lions quickly jumped over the Generals as Puno began hitting his strides, but they never really pulled away until the second quarter where they outscored the opposition, 30-8.
By halftime, the reigning champions were already sitting on a comfortable 46-22 lead.
The Heavy Bombers fell to a 1-4 record as they failed to come up with a fitting follow up to their 90-74 win over the San Sebastian Stags the previous game.
The loss also spoiled the career-best of Shawn Argente, who finished with a game-high 27 points for JRU, spiked by four three-point shots made.
