IN this side of the jungle, the Red Lions are without a tinge of doubt still the kings.
San Beda continued its reign of dominance in the NCAA, beating a full-strength Lyceum squad , 71-56, in Game Two on Monday at the Mall of Asia Arena for a third successive championship in the country's oldest college league.
Leading by just five entering the payoff period, the Red Lions went on a 22-12 run to complete a two-game sweep of the Pirates and wrap up its 11th league championship over the last 13 seasons - and 22nd overall.
"Masaya ako kasi at least nakuha namin yung championship. At least na-rewardan na yung mga pagod at puyat ng mga players ko," said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez.
"Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa lahat ng players ko dahil kung hindi dahil sa kanila, hindi kami magti-three-peat," he added.
Clint Doliguez and Donald Tankoua combined for 19 of San Beda's 22 markers in the final period, teaming up in an 8-0 run that broke the game wide open, 69-50, and started the celebration in the Red Lions' side of the MOA Arena.
Not even the return of CJ Perez could salvage the Pirates' campaign as the Red Lions stayed aggressive from the get-go behind JV Mocon, who led the team to an early 11- point lead that set the tone for the wire-to-wire victory.
Mocon finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He was named Finals MVP.
Doliguez finished with 14 points as he also came out big in both games of the finals while Tankoua added 13 points and 16 rebounds. Robert Bolick finished with 12 assists.
Perez marked his return from suspension with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists but that all went for naught as they got swept for the second consecutive year by the Red Lions in the league finals.
