    Vergel Meneses steps down as JRU coach to run for mayor in Bulacan

    VERGEL Meneses is stepping down as head coach of Jose Rizal University after nine years at the helm.

    The PBA great confirmed his decision to leave his alma mater as he now focuses on the mayoral race in his hometown Bulacan, Bulacan.

    "I’m moving on to a new arena. I want to serve my hometown this time," he said.

    Meneses had a 84-81 win-loss record through his near-decade run with the Heavy Bombers, leading the school to five semifinal appearances.

    Through his tenure in JRU, he coached PBA talents like John Wilson, Philip Paniamogan and Tey Teodoro.

    "I believe I have served my alma mater for the past nine years and it’s high time to go back to my roots," he said.

    Meneses, 50, shared that he has already told the JRU administration of his plans and the school has fully supported him in this next chapter of his life.

    "I have informed JRU regarding my plans before I submitted my Certificate of Candidacy. They are behind me in this endeavor," he said.

    The 1995 PBA MVP, though, isn't leaving the Heavy Bombers in ruins as he has already laid out a program for the future with a number of Light Bombers led by John Amores set to join the seniors ranks.

    Assistant coach Vic Lazaro is currently manning the team's practices.
