REIGNING NCAA Most Valuable Player Allen Liwag will not play his final collegiate season for College of St. Benilde as the 6-foot-6 big man went down with an achilles injury ahead of Season 102.
Multiple sources confirmed to SPIN.ph that the two-time MVP sustained the injury in Bicol, and already had an operation in August.
The injury checks out as Liwag was notably absent from Strong Group-Pilipinas in the 45th William Jones Cup, where he was headlined as one of the younger holdovers along with Letran’s Titing Manalili.
Liwag’s injury not only doomed him to a premature curtain call for his collegiate career, but also rids him of the chance to be the first-ever three-time MVP in the NCAA.
Liwag's injury is also a big blow to Benilde's title hopes as it leaves the Blazers short-staffed frontline after the departure of Shawn Umali to the PBA and Jake Gaspay to the MPBL.
With that, Liwag caps off his decorated collegiate career as a two-time MVP, two-time Mythical Five member, two-time All-Defensive Team, Season 100 Defensive Player of the Year, and Season 100 Silver Medalist
