IF Edgar Charcos didn’t catch the attention of the rest of the NCAA after his debut with Perpetual Help, then he should have their attention by now.
Charcos dazzled his way to 27 big points as he towed the Altas to an impressive 78-75 win over the fancied Letran Knights on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
The transferee out of the University of the East scored 21 points in the first half before sitting out a chunk of the second half due to foul trouble.
But the moment he got back in the game, the only trouble he caused was towards the Knights.
"Siguro nag-focus lang kami kung ano yung tinrain namin, yung mga game plan ni coach. Kaya ayun, nakaisa kami sa kanila," said Charcos.
Charcos was again at the forefront of the Altas’ attack as they ended the game with a 13-2 run to stun the Knights and continue their impressive form in the NCAA.
Charcos finished with 15 points and seven assists in their close loss to San Beda in the opener, and for him, it’s just a way of giving back to his new home.
“Challenge sa sarili ko, kasi new school ko ‘to at dapat lakasan ko yung loob ko na gawin yung pinapagawa ni coach sa akin,” he added.
While most players are surprised with the way Charcos has been performing, his head coach in Frankie Lim isn’t one of those.
“He’s my starting guard so a lot is expected from him, without me telling him that. Alam niya yun, understood na yun,” said Lim.
The fiery tactician has found a gem in the rough in the 5’9 guard, and stuck with him during the times when Charcos needed polishing in his game.
Exposing him in different leagues prior to the season, including the PBA D-League, Lim’s patience was certainly put to the test but now Perpetual is reaping the benefits with his style of play.
“The way I use him, I remember we had a game in the D-League, he had nine turnovers in the game. Sabi ko nga, dapat ginawa mong ten para double-double ka,” Lim said.
“But I think he learns, he learns fast. Maayos naman si Edgar,” he added.
For Charcos, he’s just thankful to find a coach with a balance of patience and toughness like Lim.
“Magaling siyang mag-motivate, lahat parang tinuturo niya sa amin isa isa, andun siya lagi pag may problema para sabihan kami.” - With reports from Kate Reyes and Gillian Geronimo
