San Beda or Baste? Lyceum coach Topex Robinson says choice is tough to make

LYCEUM coach Topex Robinson would rather not say which between San Beda and San Sebastian he’d prefer to face in the NCAA Season 93 finals.

But whoever comes out of the knockout battle on Tuesday between the Red Lions and Stags will have the unenviable task of facing the unbeaten Pirates, who are hungry to build their own ‘winning tradition’ in the NCAA.

"Sabi ko, wala naman tulak kabigin," said Robinson. "Both have rich tradition of championships na wala pa kami. 'Yun 'yung challenge for us is the best opportunity na kami rin gumawa ng winning tradition."

Still, Robinson also has a huge task ahead of him in preparing his wards for any scenario in what promises to be an intense best-of-three championship series.

For the Pirates to build their own winning tradition, they would either have to go through the Red Lions, a team that has won a league-high 20 titles, including nine in the last 11 seasons, or a Stags team that Robinson played and previously coached for.

San Sebastian is also special to Lyceum assistant coach Rommel Adducul, who led the Stags to five titles in the 90s.

Robinson, though, guarantees a tough knockout match between the two storied teams, with the Stags riding the momentum of three straight must-win games against a rusty Red Lions team, who have not played since October 19.

"It's going to be a battle. San Sebastian really looked good (against JRU). They look sharp. I'm sure it's going to be a battle against San Beda," said Robinson.

"For sure, 'yung simula (rust)," he added, referring to the Red Lions. "Pero you know naman San Beda, for sure they will be picking up the pace as soon as makuha na nila 'yung gusto nilang laro. They are the defending champions. I know na malalim 'yung paghuhugutan nila. I'm sure coach Boyet will be ready come November 7."

While also eager to know which team they will facing, Robinson said the most important in their build-up is preparing the team itself, and not worry much about the finals opponent.

"Actually, we don't have control of who we are going to face. Ever since naman, nothing against other teams but we don't have control over them. We don't really put so much effort and energy on the other teams. Our focus is 'yung kontrolado namin, which is 'yung team namin," said Robinson.
