EVEN with the risks that come with ligang-labas, Letran coach Allen Ricardo sees value in allowing star guard Titing Manalili to continue suiting up for teams that aren't the Knights.
Just to be clear, though, Ricardo revealed he and his prized ward have agreed on a timeline for the latter's extra-curriculars.
“Tatapusin niya yung commitments niya hanggang May. Tapos from there, focus na sa Letran kasi may June, July, August pa naman before (NCAA Season 102),” Ricardo told SPIN.ph.
When it comes down to it, the incoming third-year Letran shot-caller believes the experience Manalili gains from playing in high-pressure games outside the collegiate set-up could ultimately benefit the Knights once the 'Grand Ol' League' opens its new season in September.
“As long as medyo malayo pa naman dun sa (Season 102), ok pa naman. Maggo-grow din naman siya dun,” he said. “Yung freedom na nakakapagdesisyon siya, ma-i-incorporate din niya sa NCAA game namin.”
Indeed, Ricardo pointed to how more and more games will allow Manalili to continue developing his maturity during endgame situations, which the tactician knows full well will be crucial for the leader of the Knights' charge.
“Yung kumpiyansa niya, yung freedom na binibigay ko sa kanya sa endgame, napakahalaga nun. Kasi he’s capable of doing it. He’s a playmaker. He can do everything,” he said.
Stay safe, Titing
Still, Ricardo admitted there are understandable concerns regarding fatigue and injuries, as the incoming sophomore plays games on top of Letran's preseason build-up.
That's why the coach emphasized that he constantly reminds his primetime playmaker to take extra care of himself.
“Sinasabi ko lang sa kanya, doble-doble ingat. Wala naman tayong control pagdating sa injury,” he said.
But with an agreement in place and the blue-and-red slowly building chemistry ahead of the new season, Ricardo remains upbeat that Manalili’s temporary balancing act will eventually translate into a more mature and battle-tested leader for the Knights.
